From USA
Cycling:
Tire Width:
The UCI has narrowed the maximum width of a cyclo-cross tire
from 35mm to 33mm. The intent was to reduce the amount of
equipment that many riders feel they must bring in order
to be competitive.
However, for local races the tire width is not enforced! The tire width rule will apply at National
Championships for all riders 17 and over.
"A concern was brought to our attention last year in regards to
"converting MTB's" to narrower tires and than racers competed in
a "regular" racing category. (Personally we don't want to
prevent anyone from racing on whatever bike they own...) We
checked the rule book and we contacted USA Cycling for that
particular question and the rule that is enforced by USA Cycling
is in accordance with UCI rules in regards to cyclocross
bicycles.
What does this mean for us?
Well there will be 2 stipulations for our INWCXS in regards to MTB's to be able to race in Cyclocross Divisions. 1)
The tire width of your MTB tires cannot exceed 35mm (or 1.38
inches) 2) You must have a drop bar mounted on
your MTB! This will also be a stipulation if you have a CX bike
with flat bars you will have to have a drop bar mounted! If you
race only in the MTB Division no changes to your bike are
required!"
